Basic Rituals

These rituals are performed normally, and they obey the rules just like the rituals from any standard school.

Dire Rituals

Upon completing a Dire ritual from this school, the caster immediately loses all current FotF charges they have, then gains a number of them equal to their level in this spell school. All of their rituals in this school are considered Active. After this, until the next sunset, the caster may meditate for five minutes and intone the name of the dire ritual. Doing so completes it just as above. No other game effect that triggers or somehow bypasses a ritual’s performance may be used on Dire Rituals in any way, shape, or form (seriously, don’t even ask). While a dire ritual is active, no other FotF rituals can be performed.

All dire rituals must be performed in the presence of a Marshal.

Malefaction

Some spells from Fruits of the Fallen interact with Malefaction, which is a curse that can afflict living beings or reside in objects. If on a person, Malefaction has a numeric level indicating its power and severity. Items, however, are either Malefic or they are not. Besides where rules involving this concept are explicitly indicated, Malefaction is entirely a FOIP (find out in play) condition.

A Note on Requirements

Many of the spells in this school require that the recipient of their effects adhere to certain restrictions. As a universal rule, the caster must explicitly inform any potential recipients of what is required of them, whenever possible, or the spell cannot be cast.

Spells

Vil’s Robe of Flayed Saints

Type – Instant (Caster or Touch)

Requirements

In order to cast either version of this spell, the caster must hold a length (at least 3′) of fine, embroidered cloth that is encrusted in dried “blood.”

The caster version of this spell requires that they hold the draped cloth between their hands as part of the Immaterial gesture: clasping their hands to their chest in an exaggerated motion, steepling the index fingers. The spell ends the instant they drop this required gesture.

The touch version of this spell requires that the caster touch this length of cloth to the recipient of the spell as it is being cast.

Casting Verbal (Caster)

“Hear me, Vil! O wisest of the Fallen and corruption incarnate! Weave for me your robe of flayed saints, that I might move in exalted spheres, basking in your (Mastery)-fold majesty!”

Casting Verbal (Touch)

“I drape about you Vil’s robe of flayed saints: wear it proudly, and despair not that your faith is lost, for you are granted a (Mastery)-fold portion of His knowledge, stolen from countless worlds!”

(after 1 minute of concentration)

Description

This caster version of this spell causes the caster to shift into the Spirit World, becoming Immaterial; while in this state, the caster can take no actions save walking, and in this they are limited to (Mastery x 5) steps. The absolute maximum duration of this spell is the caster’s Mastery in hours. Immaterial beings are immune to all attacks except effects that specifically state that they can target Immaterial creatures, and they can only be seen or heard by spirit beings or by characters that possess the Medium ability. All negative ailments such as bleeding, poison, and the like, are still in full effect while Immaterial. With this spell is active, the caster counts as a spirit for the purpose of effects that only affect such. If an Immaterial character drops the required gesture, moves at more than a normal walking speed, speaks above a whisper, or takes more than their allotted steps, the spell ends. When this spell ends—by whatever means—the caster must say “I appear,” in a loud tone of voice, so that all those around them can “see” them materialize.

A character under this spell, though nearly untouched by the material world, is nevertheless in a strange reflection of it. The Spirit World has most of the same physical features as the material, meaning that this spell may not be used to negotiate physical challenges, barriers, or traps. Certain objects and locations only exist in the Spirit World, however, and only those in an

A character under this spell, though nearly untouched by the material world, is nevertheless in a strange reflection of it. The Spirit World has most of the same physical features as the material, meaning that this spell may not be used to negotiate physical challenges, barriers, or traps. Certain objects and locations only exist in the Spirit World, however, and only those in an Immaterial state may interact with them. Becoming Immaterial through this spell places one’s True Form at a certain level of risk, if applicable, and may draw infernal attention.

The touch version of this spell enchants a character such that they may participate in a free investigation over and above the one normally allowed them per day, or the bonus investigations granted by the Scholarship skill. If the recipient happens to have Advanced Inquiry, this enchantment instead generates a free Feat of Learning for the character whenever they participate in an investigation during its duration. The touch version of Vil’s Robe lasts for the caster’s Mastery in hours, and the bonus investigation, if not used within this time, is lost. Any investigation involving participants using this version of the spell will take on an infernal nature, to various unknown effects.

Empowered: This spell is cast at +2 Mastery. Anyone under the touch version of this spell generates an additional FoLearning when participating in an investigation of any kind.

Ororgorolestes’ Blade of Murdered Innocents

Type – Instant (touch) or (caster)

Requirements

The touch version of this spell requires that a weapon must be marked by a red, infernal rune that is highly visible and distinctive.

The caster of this spell must wear an earring in the shape of a blade, bear a large animal horn, or hold a magical light (from any source) in order to cast either version of this spell. The relevant object must be touched during the concentration portion of the spell in order to cast it.

Casting Verbal (touch)

O terrible Ororgorolestes, prince of murderers! Clasp this instrument to you, and carve upon it (Mastery)-fold blasphemies; before it the innocent will fall like threshing grain!”

(after 1 minute of concentration)

Casting Verbal (caster)

“O terrible Ororgorolestes, despiser of innocents! Stay your murderous blade from my lowliness! Let me stand with you high above the pit of fire, and feel your contempt for all below!”

Description

When the touch version of this spell is cast after 1 minute of concentration upon a melee weapon, and the weapon marked with an infernal rune, it gains the caster’s Mastery in activations. The wielder of the enchanted weapon can, at will, expend an activation to call Fire Strike 2 for one melee attack, which is lost regardless of whether it hits or not. Any normal defense can be used against this attack as if it were a Power Strike. As with all enchantments, this spell will not stack with itself, and it instead simply replaces a duplicate effect. This spell remains on an item until the Fire Strikes are used or for one full event, whichever comes first. Any weapon enchanted by this spell is considered a Malefic item, and will remain so indefinitely–long after the enchantment ends–unless somehow purified.

The caster version of this spell creates an enchantment which reduces all fire damage taken to 1 (called as “Reduce!”), so long as the caster is actively holding a Malefic item. Note that Threshold is always applied before Reduction effects. This version of Ororgorolestes’ Blade of Murdered Innocents lasts for the caster’s Mastery in hours.

Empowered: This spell is cast at +2 Mastery. As a permanent, passive ability, the caster adds 1 to power strikes, fire strikes, or any other X-strike effect called with a Malefic weapon.

Ikashrezziliflip‘s Banquet of Cloying Rot

Type – Instant (special)

Requirements

This resurrection version of this spell requires a seed-bearing fruit that the target can reasonably eat without incident. The fruit must be sizeable and one that requires no preparation, such as an apple, pear, peach, or plum.

The caster must touch both the donor and the deceased while concentrating and intoning the verbal, or the casting fails.

The healing enhancement version of this spell requires that the caster have a piece of hard candy, chocolate, or other individually sized sweet (no chunks of other desserts) that the recipient can eat without incident.

Casting Verbal (resurrection)

“Dread Ikashrezziliflip, see how fully this one debases itself before you, begging at the banquet of your swarming carcass. Let the offering it holds become the (Mastery)-fold essence of your rotting; that perfect, cloying sweetness even the dead can taste.”

(after at least 1 minute of concentration)

Casting Verbal (healing)

“From Ikashrezziliflip’s rotting banquet I pluck a cloying little sweet. Will you taste its (Mastery)-fold delight?”

(after 3 seconds of concentration)

Description

This potent spell, which must be cast in the presence of a Marshal, allows the caster to use a willing participant in order to resurrect someone whose soul has left their body, so long as both the soul and the sacrifice individually bear less Malefaction than the caster’s Mastery (see below). In order to cast this spell, the sacrifice must hold an edible fruit in their hands while the magician concentrates and then intones the verbal as per the requirements above. Upon completion, Ikashrezziliflip’s Banquet infuses the fruit with the corruption of the Fallen, and returns the deceased to life. The deceased is then considered immediately Stabilized, and will remain in that condition for up to one hour, just as if they had received a Coax Life. During this duration, if recipient of this spell fully consumes the offered fruit (within reason), they will then heal completely at the conclusion of that hour. If the recipient allows the spell to expire without consuming the fruit, however, they die again and their soul passes on once more. If someone other than the target of this spell consumes the fruit, that person immediately dies and has their soul pass on.

This spell cannot be used as a Coax Life directly. Note that any character whose soul has passed on must seek out plot out-of-play before they may be resurrected through any means.

Upon casting, both the sacrifice and the recipient of this spell gain a level of Malefaction, which is a cumulative, enchanted curse of indefinite duration and various effects, only one of which is the limitation it imposes on Ikashrezziliflip’s Banquet. Note that the caster of the spell will be granted knowledge of the level of Malefaction of the participants during the concentration process.

The healing version of this spell simply enchants a piece of candy such that anyone who consumes it within 1 minute gains a level of Enhanced Healing for a number of hours equal to the caster’s Mastery.

Empowered: After casting the resurrection version of this spell, the caster gains a Mastery boost equal to their level of Malefaction as a sunset enchantment. This enchantment is not compatible with any other enchantment that enhances mastery. While the caster is under the healing enchantment granted by this spell, they are immune to any negative effects that can target only the Malefacted.

Cacotrope’s Tears of Molten Strife

Type – Instant (packet or touch)

Requirements

The caster must bear subtle, yet visible markings resembling red tears streaming from their eyes. They must also hold a string of red beads (of at least simple artistic quality) or bag of red gems (the latter having in game value), numbering up to their Mastery, or the spell cannot be cast.

In order to cast the touch version of this spell, the caster must draw an infernal rune on the back of the recipient’s hand.

Casting Verbal (packet)

“By Cacotrope, devourer of maladies, I bathe you in (Mastery x2)-fold tears of molten strife!”

Casting Verbal (touch)

“Fell Cacotrope, bringer of strife without purpose, let this unworthy be washed in your molten tears; let them know the (Mastery)-fold purity of your self-righteousness!”

(after 3 seconds of concentration and drawing the rune)

Description

The packet version of this spell simply does the caster’s Mastery (or the number of beads/gems, whichever is lower) x 2 in fire damage to anyone it hits. After throwing the packet (whether it hits or not), this spell does 2 points of irresistible fire damage to the caster, targeting an arm of their choice. This self-inflicted damage is not considered an attack and may not be defended against with combat maneuvers, nor may it be Warded, Thresholded, or Resisted: the only mitigating effects that can be applied are damage Reduction and outright Immunity. Note that this damage is still taken on Resilience (Armor, Magical Protection, Vitality), as normal.

After concentrating for 3 seconds and drawing the rune upon the recipient, the touch version of this spell allows them to ignore any Feat of Charisma (Basic, Greater, or Heroic) called in their presence. In order to do so, the character must wave dismissively with the hand bearing the rune, and with noticeable contempt, at the source of the feat, saying the name of this spell in a normal speaking voice. Recipients of the touch version of this spell may not benefit from Feats of Empathy during its duration. This version of the spell lasts one hour per the caster’s Mastery.

Empowered: The packet version of this spell no longer causes damage to the caster upon casting. The caster may use the touch version of this spell on themselves without spending a charge if they concentrate for 1 minute prior to casting.

Valafar’s Cinders of Immolated Pride

Type – Readied (touch)

Requirements

The recipient of the resist version of this spell may not apologize for anything, nor visibly weep, or it is immediately revoked.

Casting Verbal

“I know of vanquished Valafar, the irresistible terror, betrayed to the pit and slain by his own will. I take for myself (Mastery)-fold cinders of his immolated pride, for like his charred bones, they still have a use.”

Activation Verbal (resist)

(after 3 seconds of concentration)

“Hold to yourself this cinder of Valafar’s immolated pride, and may his willfulness be yours.”

Activation Verbal (count)

“Cling to life like a waning cinder, like a shard of Valafar’s immolated pride.”

Description

Once cast, this spell grants its caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery, which can be activated to grant a willing target a standard Mental Resist. Like all resists, those this spell provides may not be stacked with themselves or other sources of Mental Resists. The resist lasts until it is used or for one event, whichever comes first.

Alternately, a use can be expended as a touch effect on any Critical target, resetting their death count to 0. This effect may be cast on the same target multiple times, though it will never actually Stabilize someone.

Empowered: While the caster has activations of this spell remaining, they are immune to mental effects. They may drop this spell entirely in order to stabilize someone as a touch effect (“Invoke: stabilize).

Biforis’ Shell of Towering Sloth

Type – Readied (touch)

Requirements

The recipient may not move faster than a walk, or call feats of agility, or the spell immediately ends.

The caster must hold or wear a necklace of at least Simple artistic quality composed of bone beads/chips numbering up to their Mastery, or the spell cannot be cast. Alternately, they may instead brandish a bone dagger marked with a number of infernal symbols numbering up to their Mastery as above. Both the dagger and the necklace must be Malefic items.

Casting Verbal

“I call to the memory of vanquished Biforis, the trodden, killed for his sloth. I bring forth a (Mastery)-fold portion of his towering shell, crushed and despoiled by his brethren.”

Activation Verbal

“Know the weight of Biforis’ shell, and feel his towering Sloth.”

Description

This spell grants the caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery (or the number of beads/runes, whichever is smaller), which may be expended to increase a recipient’s maximum, but not current, Prowess and Vitality by 1, until sunset (7pm). While under the effects of this spell, the recipient may not move faster than a normal walk, nor may they call any Feats of Agility, or the spell immediately ends, with any current Vitality or Prowess from this spell that the target has over their normal maximum being lost, as well.

Note that Prowess and Vitality are normally restored through a ten minute rest period.

Empowered: While the caster has activations of this spell remaining, they are immune to Bind, Shackle, and Slow effects. When under the effects of this spell (from any source), the caster increases their Prowess and Vitality by 2 instead of 1.

Earnsaxa’s Gallows of Blighted Lust

Type – Readied (touch)

Requirements

The caster must wear a sizable and rather hideous rope bracelet, which must be a Malefic item, or briefly don a handheld masquerade mask in order to cast or activate this spell.

If a recipient shows any physical affection to another character, the enchantment is revoked immediately

Casting Verbal

“I speak of vanquished Earnsaxa, the forbidden one, faded to nothing and hung with (Mastery)-fold blighted lust in the trees that once tempted her. Now, even the gallows stand empty.”

Activation Verbal

“Let Earnsaxa’s blighted lust take root in your heart, but do not fear, for her time in the gallows pays for all.”

Description

This spell grants the caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery, which may be expended to increase a recipient’s Mastery by 1 until sunset (7pm). Anyone so enchanted may not respond to inspiration effects in any fashion.

Empowered: While under the effects of this spell, from any source, the caster gains 2 Mastery instead of 1 and they may respond to inspiration effects normally.

Nergal’s Dust of Sulphurous Greed

Type – Readied (touch)

Requirements

The caster must wave a vial of acrid, unpleasantly scented powder, glitter, or sand under the nose of the recipient as they activate the spell. Note that the phys rep cannot be truly offensive: the golden rule applies here.

Casting Verbal

“I remember vanquished Nergal, of secret dooms. His greed reached for (Mastery)-fold worlds beyond, but at his gate consumed him, and I gather up his sulphurous dust for my own ends.”

Activation Verbal

(after 3 seconds of concentration)

“May Nergal’s dust of sulphurous greed spark foul memories, inuring you against transgression.”

Description

Once cast, this spell grants its caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery, which can be activated to grant a willing target a standard Magic Resist. Like all resists, those this spell provides may not be stacked with themselves or other sources of Magic Resists. The resist lasts until it is used or for one event, whichever comes first.

Empowered: While this spell is active and has uses remaining, the caster may call Reduce on any packet-delivered damaging effect that strikes them. The spell may be dropped entirely to call “True Reflect” on a packet-based spell.

Raum’s Tomb of Intractable Envy

Type – Readied (touch)

Requirements

The caster must hold a sizable, Malefic, polished stone bearing an infernal rune, or this spell cannot be cast or activated.

The caster must draw an infernal rune on the face of the target in order for them to receive this spell.

Casting Verbal

“My mind broods upon vanquished Raum, the jealous monster, who forsook all gifts but one. Let this stone bear the (Mastery)-fold sign of his intractable tomb, for no friend is as steadfast as bitter envy.”

Activation Verbal

“I guard your flesh with the sign of Raum’s Tomb; seethe in its loneliness, and know his intractable Envy.”

(after 3 seconds of concentration and drawing a rune on the target)

Description

Once cast, this spell grants its caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery, which can be activated to grant a willing target 2 points of magical protection. As with all magical protection enchantments, this spell will not stack with itself or other sources of protection, instead simply replacing the original effect.

Empowered: This spell is cast at +2 Mastery. When the caster is under its enchantment, from any source, they gain 3 points of protection rather than 2.

Chalisdharma’s Abattoir of Fiendish Gluttony

Type – Readied (touch)

Requirements

The recipient must be a conscious, willing target for this spell to take effect

With each activation of this spell, the recipient must choose to either spontaneously take a limb wound of their choice, or to burn a current feat of their choice. The caster must inform the recipient of what is required of them, and their sacrifice chosen, before concentrating and saying the activation verbal.

Neither the limb wound nor the feat may be restored for at least 15 minutes after casting, else the enchantment is revoked immediately.

Casting Verbal

“I have dreamt of vanquished Chalisdharma, father of fiends and by fiends devoured. In his abattoir I have come to know the (Mastery)-fold power of unceasing gluttony, that most debasing of sins.”

Activation Verbal

“I take from you an offering for Chalisdharma’s abattoir, that you might know the gluttony of fiends.”

(after 3 seconds of concentration)

Description

Once cast, this spell grants its caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery. The recipient of one of the activations of this spell may, until sunset, restore all of their native Vitality and Prowess with 5 minutes rest instead of 10. In addition, during that same duration they may activate any basic ritual they know with 10 minutes of meditation instead of the normal requirements, loudly intoning the name of the ritual at the end of the meditation.

Empowered: If the caster concentrates for 1 minute prior to casting this spell, it does not cost a charge. While this spell is active and has uses remaining, the caster is immune to Strength Drain, Will Drain, Stillness, and Caging.

Xaphan’s Grave of Formless Wrath

Type – Readied (packet or touch)

Requirements

The caster must not wear armor of any kind, nor hold any shield or weapon, or this spell immediately ends.

When casting the touch version of the spell, the caster must draw an infernal rune upon the flesh of the dead.

Casting Verbal

I have heard the echoes of vanquished Xaphan, who shakes the land in formless wrath. His grave has become the font of (Mastery)-fold vengeance, never satisfied, though I give it brief purpose.”

Activation Verbal (packet)

“From Xaphan’s grave of formless wrath, I cast you down!”

Activation Verbal (touch)

“May the grave reject all marked in the sign of Xaphan, cursed with his formless wrath.”

(after 3 seconds of concentration)

Description

Once cast, this spell grants its caster a number of activations equal to their Mastery, which can be activated to throw a packet that inflicts a Knockdown effect on anyone it hits. Alternately, the touch version of this spell will enchant the body of someone who has died but who has yet to have their soul pass on, extending their passing time to 1 hour.

Targets suffering the Knockdown effect are forced to their knees or into a sitting or prone position, and they may not stand. Victims of this spell may still attack and defend, as well as use spells and skills as normal, and they may crawl upon their hands and knees. Other characters may carry victims of this spell as they would someone suffering a leg wound. A character may call a Feat of Strength to resist the effects of this spell directly. Knockdown lasts 1 minute.

Empowered: While this spell is active and has uses remaining, the caster is immune to Knockdown, Stun, Blindness, and Paralysis. They may maintain this spell without abiding by its requirements.

The Durance of 1,000 Years

Type – Ward

Requirements

No requirements.

Casting Verbal

“(commissioner name) has shown me favor and tasked me with this durance of 1,000 years. May the memory of the pit serve to guard against base temptation, that I might return bounteous, undeserving of torment.”

Description

With this spell up, a caster may “burn” a Fruits of the Fallen charge to resist the effects of any single packet-delivered magical effect. Such a resist is called as “Ward” when activated. The caster can end this spell for a “free” instance of such a resist, or to generate a physical light (glowstick) in green or red. Like all light effects, the glowstick is entirely physical, and it may be handed off or used at the holder’s discretion. Each individual light lasts as long as the lightstick does, it is turned off (for non-chemical glowsticks), or one event has passed, whichever comes first.

Empowered: While this spell is active the caster may burn a FotF charge to generate a light without dropping the ward itself. In addition, while this ward is active the caster is particularly resistant to fiendish desires and transformations.

Rituals

The Touch of Evil

15 minutes

Draw a large tetragram or mystic circle on a piece of paper, placing a crafted item (general craft, weapon, jewelry, or artwork) at its center when it is completed. If any time remains in the ritual, trace the contours of the diagram with your fingers, murmuring lowly until its completion. At the end of the ritual, the item becomes Malefic. Note that items which are already Malefic cannot be used for the ritual, and the item must fit entirely within the circle for this ritual to take effect. In lieu of drawing the diagram, a well-made cloth representation of such can be used, with the caster having to trace its lines during the ritual, as above.

Five Servilities

1 minute

Deliberately wrap a small, valued object (a gem or tagged item; no currency) in layers of cloth, place it in a box, bind the box with cord or rope, mark it with an infernal rune, and conceal it among your belongings, all while whispering repetitive homages to the Fallen. These homages must be most obsequious and servile.

The Bloody Quill

5 or 15 minutes

Participate in an intellectual, political, or personal argument between two other parties, continually pointing out, with sober detachment and a great deal of subtlety, the irreconcilable differences between them. (5 minutes). Alternately, write out a scholarly argument on a controversial subject that exposes the many hypocrisies of both sides, in an attempt to sow intellectual discord. (15 minutes).

Idle Blasphemy

5 minutes

Surround a bare patch of earth or sand with stones, and within it carefully draw an image of a figure of worship from another World. Mar the image, striking out its salient aspects, and surround it with infernal runes. Meditate on your desecration for the remainder of the ritual.

The Trap of Flesh

3 seconds

Before you, place a sculptural representation of the fallen you serve, which must be a piece of artwork of Accomplished quality or better. “Cut” your arm with a dagger and “bleed” over the statue, showing no signs of pain or emotion. This act causes your arm to be wounded, bypassing all resilience. If somehow you do not take a wound, the ritual fails. If you do not bear the wound for at least 5 minutes, Foul this ritual for the remainder of the event.

Unworthy Prayers

5 minutes/ 1 minute

Recite with fevered intensity the aspects of a particular Fallen or Vanquished, noting its strengths, powers, and the honors it has heaped upon you, if any. After this, meditate on its nature for the remainder of the ritual. If you are an actual servant of that Fallen, you may skip the meditation entirely, reducing the time this ritual takes to 1 minute.

Dire Rituals

Eater of Faith

1 minute

In complete solitude (save for the presence of a marshal), desecrate a powerful artifact of a Worldly faith by marking it in infernal runes, dripping black or red wax from Malefic candles on it, and dedicating it repetitively to the Fallen you serve. Likely, it will become uselessly desecrated for all time. Under the right circumstances, however, the object may become a valued artifact of the Fallen.

Merchant of Desperation

1 minute

In the presence of a marshal, gather together a number of crafted or tinkered items which total at least 50 (currency) in value. While speaking how each of the items will glorify and assist your quest for souls for the Fallen, destroy them one after the other (give their tags to the marshal, where applicable).

Denying the Fiend

variable

In the presence of a Marshal, forswear the eating of a particular food, the touching of a particular weapon, and the speaking of a particular word, each of which must be significant to you in some fashion. Note that the marshal may indicate whether or not a particular oath is appropriate or worthy enough, if necessary. Every use of this ritual requires an additional 3 penances, as above, and all are cumulative and permanent. If you break any one of your penances, All of your FotF rituals are fouled for the remainder of the event.

No Path for the Lost

variable

In the presence of a Marshal, call out a fellow Soul Merchant, who you truly believe has shirked their commission, or is obviously giving in to their Fiendish nature. Kill them and profane (mutilate) their corpse. If you fail to do so within an hour of declaiming against them, all of your FotF rituals are fouled for the remainder of the event.

Luminary of the Black Mass

variable

During The Festival of Fleshes, The Blasphemous Sabbath, or The Zaborshia Observances, make significant contributions and preparations for the gathering, culminating in an important, prepared speech. This ritual may only be performed during one of the official “holidays” of the Burning Pit.

The Maw Slavers

variable

After drawing up a contract for the soul of an appropriate target (Pure of Spirit or Truly Wicked) and having them sign it as “normal”, give them a surprise gift without any strings attached, which must be worth at least 10 (currency). For the remainder of the event, treat the person as a close friend whenever possible, defending them, giving them counsel, etc.
